Q: How do you use this product ?

Asked by: Celina - 2/28/2021
A: This product is a clear mask material with an adhesive back that you can cut and hand apply over decals to protect them. ColorSpark Vinyl Shield is great for protecting the Opal vinyl from scratches, it has UV protection built in and will make your decal vinyl dishwasher safe. We recommend cutting your Vinyl Shield with an offset/contour/shadow so it is slightly bigger than your decal, to fully protect the decal from water.

Q: I just applied the vinyl shield and there are all air bubbles that I cant get rid of. What did I do wrong?

Asked by: Gina - 3/3/2021
A: ColorSpark Vinyl Shield is so clear,we suggest having a dark background when you layer it. We also recommend using the white plastic backing of Acrylic Hotfix tape or nonwaxed parchment paper to help with layering it. This prevents the ColorSpark Vinyl Shield from sticking to your decal before you are ready to layer it. It also helps prevent getting air bubbles under your Vinyl Shield. When you have your ColorSpark Vinyl Shield lined up, use our Hinge Method to secure the right side of your app tape to your workstation or table and the decal backing, Lift the app tape to remove your parchment or the Acrylic hotfix tape backing and squeegee the app tape down straight across from right to left. If you do happen to get air bubbles, you can point a hair dryer at the decal GENTLY...keep the heat moving so you do not melt your decal. This heat can help you work the air bubbles out.

Q: Can you use this over a layered decal?

Asked by: Caity - 3/10/2021
A: Yes, you can apply our ColorSpark Vinyl Shield over layered decals. Since the different layers of vinyl will have a higher profile, you may get slight gaps along the edges of layered vinyl where the Vinyl Shield may not lie perfectly flat against the back layer of vinyl. We recommend Lightly warming the area with a hair dryer or heat gun to minimize any gaps. Keep your heat moving so you don’t melt the material.

Q: What are the cutting spec for this item on a SIlhouette machine?

Asked by: angelina martinez - 3/2/2021
A: We have had success with using the same settings that we use on our ColorSpark Opal vinyls.
Every machine and blade life is different. Do test cuts, starting with Blade 3, Force 10, Speed 5. Adjust the force upwards if it doesn't cut cleanly on your test. For very very used blades, we have gone as high as Blade 4, Force 18.

Q: What are settings on Cricut Please. Thanks! Anita

Asked by: Anita Vogel - 3/8/2021
A: We have had great results using the same cut settings for ColorSpark Vinyl Shield as we do for our ColorSpark Adhesive vinyls. Start with a custom setting of 135 force, single cut. Vinyl+ can also be tried for test cuts. There are a few factors that can affect your cut, including life of your blade, your individual machine calibration and life of your cutting mat, so please start with these and do test cuts, adjusting your pressure accordingly.

Q: How much does this need to cover or go past the edge of the decal? I realize this can be done in Cricut Design Space but only with certain fonts. Do you have any suggestions as to how to do this for all fonts? Thank you, I always enjoy your videos!

Asked by: Helena - 3/1/2021
A: While a larger the contour give more surface area surrounding your decal and protecting it, we prefer smaller contours for a clean look. A contour of .1 to .2 will give you a sufficient size to fully cover your decal and still give you a nice, clean look.

To achieve this with other fonts, we would recommend using Silhouette Studios software. The upgraded versions will also allow you to export as .svg.

Q: It is not sticking to my cup in spots. I already ha e the decal on and when I applied the vinyl sheild it has multiple spots around the decal where it is not sticky at all. Help!

Asked by: Courtney - 4/10/2021
A: Hi there!
There could be a couple different factors contributing to Vinyl Shield not sticking:

A: On existing decals, gently clean the surface with alcohol prior to applying the ColorSpark Vinyl Shield. Dirt, lint or finger oils can impede the adhesive from sticking.

B: Cut the Vinyl Shield slightly larger than the decal you wish to cover. We like to use an offset of .03-.06.

C: ColorSpark Vinyl Shield works best on smooth surfaces and is not recommended for textured vinyls or textured/powder coated surfaces.

Q: Can you glue stones to the vinyl shield?

Asked by: Dedra - 3/18/2021
A: Gluing to various surfaces is a science in itself. Various adhesives on the market plus the variety of materials you can glue to, how an item will be used plus individual expertise in gluing all come into play when considering gluing rhinestones to a surface. We do not recommend hand crystallizing over the top of ColorSpark Vinyl Shield.

If you would like to add rhinestones to a hard, non-porous surface, we suggest either using hotfix rhinestones and pressing to our Bling Anything Decal material to make a dishwasher safe/car wash safe rhinestone decal. We also strongly recommend using our Bling Anything Sheets, which have 18,000 ss06 Diamond Cut rhinestones embedded in a sheet backed with an incredibly strong , industrial grade adhesive. You can cut the Bling Anything Sheets with a razor or scissors, peel the protective paper backing sheet and stick to a hard, non-porous surface.

These recommendations are not for apparel, but for any hard, smooth surface.

Q: So Ive been playing with cattle ear tags. I see there are some makers on etsy making some of the neatest tags to put in cattle and offering a lifetime warranty. I cant figure put their exact process, but would this work? They would be outdoors 24/7, and hold up for 10+ years?

Asked by: Cecilia - 3/22/2021
A: Our ColorSpark Vinyl Shield is a great way to protect vinyl and other surfaces, as it's a clear mask-type material with a strong adhesive on the back.

The longer the ColorSpark Vinyl Shield is on a surface, the stronger that adhesive bond becomes. It also has a UV Protectant built-in, which will prolong the life of decals exposed to the sun.

From the research I've done, it looks like the cattle ear tags you'd mentioned are laser engraved. From our testing and use of this product, the ColorSpark Vinyl Shield resists lifting in daily use, however that is with human use, not outdoor use on cattle. If you choose to test this product on your cattle ear tags, we would love to hear your results!

Asked by: PamBee - 5/2/2021

Q: Hi I have a few questions about using Vinyl Shield. :-) 1 - Can you please tell me your suggested starting pressure setting when using the Fine Point Blade in the Cricut Maker? 2 - Are either your 45 or 65 degree blades better to use with your Vinyl Shield on a Cricut Maker, than Cricut's Fine Point Blade? If so, which one is better and what is your suggested starting pressure setting when using the 45 or 65 degree blade? Thank you so much.

Asked by: Erica - 5/12/2021

Q: I got vinyl shield the first time I saw it in tik tok, when I try to use it the first time it didn't stick to the Starbucks cup, I did the wet application and I did clean the vinyl with alcohol, since it didn't work I put it to the side , well I need it to protect a cup for an older lady so is easy for.her to wash and again it didn't work, it doesn't seem sticky in the back , it feels like a piece of plastic, please help

Asked by: Mariel - 7/3/2021
A: The wet application is usually not the best for beginners, I would recommend the dry application if you're just starting out. As for the adhesion, it needs to cure for 24 hours after being applied to the tumbler before it can be handled. Q: Do you need to cut the vinyl shield larger than the design for it to work?

Asked by: Nicole - 12/31/2021
A: Yes. You'll want a decent sized offset around your design for it to seal best. Also be sure that the surface is smooth and clean prior to applying. Textured surfaces or powder coating etc will keep it from it's best performance. Make sure just like a regular decal to also wait 24 hours after applying before washing, it adheres best with a little time.

Q: Hello! :) What is the thickness of the Vinyl Shield? I was considering using it inside a story board tumbler to protect the decal. Of course, remember to let it sit for 3 days, after application. I will use vegetable glycerin and water inside the story board tumbler. I LOVE Learning! Thank you so much!

Asked by: Darlene Smith - 1/8/2022
A: The best is to experiment with small scraps. The thickness is similar to a few layers of regular vinyl or a thin epoxy coat. Do a small test run to be sure the glycerin won't eat away at the adhesive in a small cup or tupperware of glycerin for a few days with some scraps layered so you don't waste a cup and chunk of shield. Be sure to also let the shield sit and cure 24 hours for max adhesion, esp before adding an oil. Vegetable oil is great for removing old sticker glue etc, so without testing this ourselves, we cannot be sure it will work long term.

Q: How do you apply it over stickers to give to customers? Or do you give it for them to apply over the sticker themself?

Asked by: Jennifer Rogers - 1/24/2022
A: Just like layering regular color vinyl and have it as a finished product, aside from it will be your largest layer (offset larger than your design to seal it in and protect it)

Q: What are the cut settings for ColorSpark Vinyl Shield on a Graphtec cutter?

Asked by: Melanie - 2/8/2022
A: To cut ColorSpark Vinyl Shield with a Graphtec, try using a Speed of 20 and Force of 13.

Always do test cuts, as the life of your blade, as well as your cut strip, can affect your cuts. You can also start with the same setting you use for Adhesive vinyl and do a test cut with your Graphtec. If your blade or cut strip are worn, you may need to bump up the force and slow down the speed.

Q: can it be used to put on sticker paper to make stickers waterproof??

Asked by: maricela - 3/4/2022
A: Yes, it will be even top rack dishwasher safe. Be sure to offset the vinyl shield to be larger than your sticker though, you want it fully encased by the shield. Also wait a few days before exposing it to water. It's a lot like regular adhesive vinyl, the longer it sits, the stronger the bond gets.

Q: When we add the shield to a car decal, do we still add the transfer tape to it and if so, do we wait 24 hrs after applying the shield? Thank you!

Asked by: Rozanna - 4/1/2022
A: Vinyl shield isn't really needed on a car decal unless you're protecting a delicate design, or opal vinyl that will scratch easily.
For tumblers, same concept, esp for opals.
Yes you apply transfer tape to lift the entire design and place it. Rub it all down really well, then remove the transfer tape.
For tumblers and car washes, yes give it at least 24 hours before washing to let the adhesive fully activate.
Keep in mind also you won't get a good seal if you're placing it on things like powder coat or textures, it needs a smooth, flat, and clean surface to perform it's best.

Q: Will this keep the vinyl from peeling off?

Asked by: Laurie Anderson - 4/3/2022
A: Peeling from what in particular?
Regardless, make sure you have a clean surface before placing a decal - clean surface with rubbing alcohol and let dry before applying.
For car decals, Vinyl Shield isn't needed unless the design has a lot of delicate thin lines / pieces, or if it's an Opal then the vinyl shield will protect it from scratches.
For tumblers, yes, it's also a good protectant for that as well, esp since they're handled a lot more, rubbed with a sponge to be washed, and so forth.
The vinyl shield even makes a tumbler top rack dishwasher safe!
Do be sure to offset the shield larger than your design, you want the edges to fully overlap the decal it's protecting.
Also wait for at least 24 hours for it to settle itself and develop a strong grip. The grip gets stronger with time.
Use transfer tape and avoid touching the adhesive.
It will not work well on a textured or powder coated surface.

Q: vinyl shield and htv anything, what's the difference?

Asked by: Dianne Provine - 6/6/2022
A: Vinyl Shield is meant to go on top of decals to ensure that they are water and scratch resistant. It can only be applied to smooth vinyl on a flat, smooth surface. It doesn't have to be used on top of decals that have been made with HTV/Bling Anything. You press HTV on top of HTV Anything to create a decal.

Asked by: Crafteesoul (Tiffany) - 8/27/2022

The color change should still work.

Q: Can this be used over printable vinyl after printing?

Asked by: GIA - 8/29/2022
A: Yes, our ColorSpark Vinyl Shield can be used over any smooth adhesive vinyl to help protect it. We advise to cut the Vinyl Shield with a contour, so it goes beyond the edges of the decal.
Also, if your decal is for outdoor use, an ecosolvent printer will be your best bet. Decals printed with a home laserjet or inkjet will fade quickly in the sun, even with our ColorSpark Vinyl Shield over the top.

Q: Do you ship to Australia and if you what would be the cost

Asked by: Debra - 9/14/2022
A: Yes, we do ship all our materials worldwide, with the exceptions of large equipment and chemicals.

Shipping is calculated at checkout and depends on where you live in relation to our warehouse in Bradenton, FL as well as the size of the package we are shipping to you.

We do not calculate shipping--rather, it is determined by the various shipping carriers and you will have a couple of different choices during checkout to choose from.
